Anacortes AAUW Hosts Literary Dance Performance Mary Lou Sanelli, a Seattle-based author, columnist, and Master Dance teacher, with duet partner Stephanie Cane, will present the literary dance performance CROW at the April 11 meeting of the Anacortes Branch of AAUW at 7:00 p.m. at the Anacortes Public Library. The public is invited to this free event. CROW combines a reading from Sanelli’s book A Woman Writing with a duet dance performance accompanied by music and projected images. Sanelli’s choreography is a tribute to all birds and was inspired by her watching two crows build a nest outside her window and then, for the next months, work out how to share the responsibilities of life, much like in our own lives. CROW was written first for her Seattle column in City Living magazine. She also contributes to the Seattle Times, Art Access magazine, Dance Teacher magazine, National Public Radio, Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, Seattle’s NPR station KUOW FM, and other publications and radio stations. Sanelli’s latest collection of essays, A Woman Writing, is a jaw-droppingly honest, humorous, and poignant depiction of the ego-pulverizing effect writing can have on our lives, while, still, we wouldn’t choose to do anything else. Her memoir, Among Friends, has been a national book club choice and a Goodreads Notable title. She has also earned the reputation of a uniquely entertaining and inspiring public speaker and has taken her one-woman staged reading “The Immigrant’s Table” to a theatrical performance. Her first novel, The Star Struck Dance Studio, is due out this fall (Chatwin Books). She lives with her husband in Seattle. The American Association of University Women’s mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. The Anacortes Branch was started in 1956 and has given more than $75,000 in scholarships to local women.
