Aug 2    Nathan James @ The Rockfish
Never one to follow convention, and always one to think for himself, Nathan James has created a musical identity with his homemade instruments and self taught skills. Whether you catch Nathan James as his true one man band pickin' and scratchin' on his own invention of washboard guitar, stomping out time on his custom suitcase drum set while singing and blowing harmonica or kazoo; or leading his new trio, you are sure to be moved and impressed with the unique energy and soul that he possesses. Nathan James is a well respected and experienced artist in his field. For 15 years now, he has successfully made his living touring and recording, solely specializing on his passion of blues, and American roots music. Starting his career of full time gigging musician at age 18, Nathan is no stranger to live performance.

Drawing from a deep well of influences from many early roots artists and styles, James was quickly attracted to the individuality of self made music and artistic expression. While simultaneously discovering the guitar and the blues at age 13, Nathan James has since been in complete focus as to where his life goal would lead. Growing up in the small town of Fallbrook Ca, has been influential in deciding to choose this path. "There wasn't a lot to do here, so you either got in trouble, or found something productive to do!" Having supportive parents that didn't force him into the usual college after high school allowed Nathan to go straight into the 'real working world' of playing music. "Part of it was luck that I was able to get paying gigs right off the bat!" Local San Diego blues bands the Blues Pharaohs and Billy Watson gave Nathan a chance to get his feet wet with enough local gigs to support himself literally a month after graduating high school! This led to also working with well known Southern California blues acts Jamie Wood, and Johnny Dyer. At age 19 Nathan got the call from internationally known blues veteran James Harman to join his band and tour the country. With Harman is where he gained the experience that has shaped most of his own career.

After touring and recording nonstop with Harman for 3 1/2 years, Nathan decided to have a go at literally a solo career- that is playing one man acoustic based blues. This was instantly successful, leading to playing over 30 gigs a month at times!! With the strain of carrying the entire show by yourself all the time, Nathan met up with harmonica player/vocalist Ben Hernandez, a like minded young blues roots musician aficionado, and together they started working as a duo. As word spread of these two and their ability to bring back to life the spirit of duos like Sonny Terry and Brownie Mcghee country blues, they gained international notoriety while traveling all over the West Coast and; In 2007, they entered the International Blues Challenge in Memphis TN, and took 1st place! This really has made their reputation spread like wildfire. That year alone the duo traveled to Denmark, Italy and Taiwan. During his career Nathan has worked with other many well known artists including: Kim Wilson, Pinetop Perkins, Billy Boy Arnold, Lazy Lester, Johnny Dyer, Janiva Magness, Rick Holmstrom, Mark Hummel and Gary Primich.

Currently Nathan’s three piece band is forging a cumulative sound that combines elements of 1920's acoustic blues, amplified juke joint hill country, and 1950's uptown blues mixed with 1960's soulful R&B! Influences range from Tampa Red, to B.B. King, to James Brown and the Famous Flames. This is not your average blues power trio that leans towards the much abused "blues rock" formula. Instead each member in the band knows all the nuances of the different feels and tones. Knowing how to get people's attention, Nathan will often go out solo from the bandstand and burst into a frenzied ragtime breakdown that can lead to a washboard solo on his custom LED lit 'Washtar Gitboard'! Another unique aspect of a live show is band mate Troy Sandow. He may start off the set on upright bass while Nathan will play an uptown lead guitar style in the vein of B.B. or T-bone Walker. Then he will switch over to amplified harmonica and Nathan will fingerpick a driving groove on his baritone guitar in the style of R.L. Burnside or Lightnin' Hopkins. Although Nathan's band pays homage to these traditions and has the same quality of musicianship, there is an original and fresh new energy coming from musicians of a much younger generation.

Aug 4    Ron Hendee Band @ The Rockfish
A native of Wichita, Kansas, Ron began playing trumpet at age ten. Upon entering high school, Ron had a place in the All City High School Jazz Ensemble. The family was relocated to Everett, Washington during the fall of Ron's sophomore year where Ron found himself in the solo spot of Jan Jessen's Jazz Band.

After graduating from high school, Ron joined one of Seattle's touring bands, The Springfield Rifle. Later he Shirley Lorene & Rushour.

After a tour in Air Force where he was a featured trumpet/flugelhorn/vocal soloist, he met up with trombonist Randy Oxford who introduced him to The Legendary Blues Cruise. Randy encouraged Ron to go and experience the chance to play with some of the nation's best blues performers. Since that first cruise, Ron has shared the stage with such greats as Tommy Castro, Bernard Allison, Chico Banks, Marcia Ball, Eden Brent, Elvin Bishop, Lionel Young, Keith Crossan's Big Band, Lee Oskar & The Low Rider Band, Curtis Salgado, Lloyd Jones, and many more.

He has performed with Northwest greats Polly O'Keary & The Rhythm Method, The Red Hot Blues Sisters, The Greg Marshal Band, The Randy Oxford Band, and The Mark Whitman Band.

He currently performs with, not only his own band but, with Hot Rod's Blues Revue. Ron feels his new band is the best group of musicians around with Doug Kearney (guitars/vocals), Jim Cliff (bass/vocals), and Matt Williams (drums). Ron's new CD "Through The Arch" (from darkness to light) is getting airplay world wide. The CD features national/international artists Mike Rogers (drums), Eden Brent (piano on My Little Boogaloo written by Ron for her), Doug Kearney (guitars), Darryl "Funky Z" Fields (bass), Scotty Harris (bass, saxes), and Lissa Ramaglia (bass/background vocals).

Aug 9    Trish Hatley @ The Rockfish
Vocalist Trish Hatley is one of the most beloved and enduring figures on the Northwest music scene.

Known for her easy sense of swing, beautiful tone and innate sensitivity to the music, she effectively balances technical mastery with genuine accessibility, making her extremely popular among jazz fans everywhere she performs.

Hatley is also one of the hardest working musicians around. She performs and records with her own band, the Trish Hatley Quintet, as well as the vocal jazz trio Trish, Hans & Phil. She has appeared in several Pops concerts with the Everett Symphony and has also been a frequent guest vocalist with Jim Kerl’s Swing Session Big Band.

Trish has recorded five CD’s to date and has also produced four shows: “A Fifth of Jazz,” “Women in Song”, “Isn’t It Romantic” and “The Great American Songbook.” Her latest CDs, “I Remember” was released in January 2010, and released in March 2010, “Sing, Ask and It Is Given,” a collection of affirmations set to original jazz melodies that she composed.

Trish performs regularly at festivals, nightspots and concerts throughout the Northwest. Showtime for Trish's Rockfish performance is 6PM.

"When I think of Trish, the first word that comes to mind is dazzling. Her ability to captivate the audience while inspiring the musicians has made Trish one of our most requested soloists."
—Dr. Paul Cobb, Conductor, Everett Symphony

"This slim brunette does it all with a style and energy suffused with a self effacing wit and possesses a soulful soprano voice!"

Aug 10    Chris Stevens and the Surf Monkeys @ The Rockfish
Seattle guitarist and singer Chris Stevens has been a favorite of Northwest blues fans for many years. His intense playing calls the prime years of stellar guitarists like B.B. King, T-Bone Walker and Kenny Burrell to mind. Preferring to deliver his electric blues lines with the rich tones of a big Gibson archtop, Chris combines scorching blues feeling with dazzling chops and constantly surprising musical ideas to create a style that cuts across genres, including blues, jazz... and surf!

Taking their unusual name from a song title by legendary blues guitarist Freddy King, the Surf Monkeys keep a firm footing in the blues while stretching the boundries with ultra cool spy themes, reverb drenched surf twang and Chris’ own “blues on the edge of jazz” originals. The Surf Monkeys truly are the missing link!

Aug 11    Mark Dufresne @ The Rockfish
Mark DuFresne is one of the most sought after Blues talents in the Northwest. The Washington Blues Society has awarded him best vocalist, songwriter and harmonica more than any other artist.

He has recorded three CD’s of all original music. “Out of That Bed”, “Have Another Round” and “There’s A Song In There”, which featured the lineup of the former Hollywood Fats Band.

In 2002 Mark joined the coveted band “Roomful of Blues” as lead vocalist. While in that role the band received a Grammy nomination for “That’s Right”. They also won the W.C. Handy award for Best Band - 2004. The New England Blues monthly awarded him Best Blues Vocalist. He returned home to the Pacific Northwest in 2006 after a very successful four and a half years.

Recently he has had the pleasure to tour in Europe with Italy’s finest... Maurizio Pugno, guitar, Alberto Marsico, organ and bass, and Gio Rossi: excellent musicians, excellent pasta...

Duresne's work on the chromatic harmonica is considered as some of the most innovative in Blues music and his skill at circular breathing consistently leaves audiences amazed.

“DuFresne is as distinctive as a vocalist as he is a fiery player; rather than recycling old riffs, his original compositions are tuneful, melodic and grooveworthy..” - Blues Review Magazine....

Aug 11    Marion Weston @ H2O

MARION WESTON began touring in April 2007 shortly after she returned from recording her first CD “Everything” in Nashville. Marion’s desire was merely to create an independent collection of country songs written by Canadian and American songwriters that spoke to her heart. To her surprise, soon after she finished the recording process Marion found that she was getting invites to perform, including an offer to open on the big stage at the huge Merritt Mountain Music Festival in Merritt, B.C. in front of Carrie Underwood and Reba McEntire. Not one to turn down a challenge and an opportunity, Marion rounded up a gangbuster set of musicians that love live music as much as she does.

The MARION WESTON music experience is both versatile and creative and offers her audiences a great blend country, rock, blues and funky original and cover tunes that show off Marion’s bluesy, sexy, silky voice.

MARION WESTON loves life and all of her friends and family in Bellingham, Washington. She feels blessed to be able to touch so many and make new friends with performances in the northwest and Canada.

Aug 16    Mark Hummel and the Blues Survivors @ The Rockfish
The past two decades have seen the emergence of young harmonica-led blues bands. In California, groups that draw their inspiration from the Chicago school but add elements of jump blues and rock 'n' roll into the mix have come up with an exciting new style of West Coast blues. In Oakland, the northern capital of California blues, resides the incredibly powerful harmonica player and vocalist Mark Hummel, leader of The Blues Survivors, who has been a major force in shaping and defining this musical genre.

Mark Hummel is a road warrior - a true Blues Survivor. Along the way, he has crafted his own trademark harmonica sound - a subtle combination of tone, phrasing and attack combined with a strong sense of swing. While Mark is new to Electro Fi Records, his earlier albums, constant touring and appearances at the major blues festivals have firmly established his solid reputation around the US and Europe.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Los Angeles, California, Mark absorbed the music of such Chicago based harp blowers as Little Walter, James Cotton, and Sonny Boy Williamson, before settling in Berkeley, California in 1972. There he played with local bluesmen such as Cool Papa, Boogie Jake, Mississippi Johnny Waters and Sonny Lane. In 1980, he took the helm to lead the popular Blues Survivors Band.

In 1985, the Blues Survivors released Playing in Your Town, on Rockinitus Records, and immediately went out on the road. Earning their name, they toured virtually non-stop throughout the United States, Canada and Europe often playing alongside such blues greats as Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Eddie Taylor.

While on tour with his band in 1988, Mark was introduced to Canadian guitarist and vocalist Sue Foley. After several tours that year, Mark and Sue released Up & Jumpin', which also features piano legend Charles Brown.

Eager to revive the Blues Survivors, though, Mark hit the road again in 1990, before releasing Hard Lovin' in 1992 on Double Trouble Records. He has been on the road constantly since then, stopping only to record Feel Like Rockin' in 1994 and Married to the Blues in 1995 on Flying Fish Records. He has performed at numerous festivals across the country, including the San Francisco Blues Festival, Chicago Blues Festival, King Biscuit Blues Festival, Waterfront Blues Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and has performed and judged at the Hohner Harmonica World Championship, held in Germany.

For Heart of Chicago, Mark's sixth release and first on Tone-Cool, Mark traveled to the Windy City to record with some of the city's most legendary players and pay tribute to his Chicago blues influences. Featuring former Muddy Waters sidemen Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Bob Stroger on drums and bass, guitarist Dave Myers from Little Walter's band, and others. In 1998 Mark released Lowdown To Uptown, his 7th cd, a mix of Chicago blues & uptown jazz. This cd featues great guests such as Jr. Watson, Mike Welch, Brenda Boykin & the last piano recording of the late, great Charles Brown. Mark's most current CD is called "Ain't Easy No More" on the Electro Fi label. A mixture of Hummel's originals and some choice rearrangements of previously recorded blues. It's receiving extended radio play at the moment.

Since 1991 Mark has been both producing & performing at his Blues Harmonica Blowout™ series. These shows have grown to be a much heralded event & continue to draw sellout crowds wherever they appear. The list of participents is a Who's Who of Blues harp history: John Mayall, John Hammond, Norton Buffalo, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, Huey Lewis, Curtis Salgado, Kim Wilson, Watermelon Slim, Sugar Ray Norcia, Kenny Neal, James Harman, Fingers Taylor, Snooky Pryor, Dave Earl, Rod Piazza, Magic Dick, William Clarke, Rick Estrin, Paul DeLay, Billy Branch, Lazy Lester, Carey Bell, Little Sonny, Paul Osher, Lee Oskar, Cephas and Wiggins, Gary Primich, Paul Rischell and Annie Raines, Carlos Del Junco, Sam Myers and many more!

Aug 17    John Carswell and Blues Union @ The Rockfish
Blues Union is a soulful groove machine led by B-3 Organist and Blues Vocalist John Carswell.

It’s Carswell’s incredible blues vocals that set him apart from those who claim to play the blues. He loves the good times and he loves to make you smile doing what he does best.

Bass player, Larry Holloway, quips: “that guy’s got more soul than James Brown.”

Over the course of his forty-year career, Carswell has played with Blues and R&B legends B.B. King, Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, and Ray Charles.

Residing now in the Northwest he works between Seattle and Bellingham as frequently as the clubs can book him. Locally, he has performed at Resort Semiahmoo, Poppe’s Bistro, Skagit Valley Resort, and for the Jazz Project’s Art of Jazz Series.

The band is filled out by Judd Sherwood on drums who performs regularly throughout the Northwest with his own groups and by carefully assembling players from around the region to play jazz in concert and at clubs. He has performed with Herb Ellis, Bill Perkins, Teddy Edwards, John Stowell, Bert Wilson, and Nancy King. He founded The Jazz Project in February 1997 to increase performance opportunities for Jazz Musicians and to promote the music from a musician’s perspective of community development and education. He has received eight consecutive grants from Washington State Arts Commission.

Aug 19    The Dusty 45's @ The Heart of Anacortes

“Rousing horns, sizzling original numbers, and genuine talent…”

Billy Joe Huels (Lead vocals, trumpet, guitar and songwriter)

Billy Joe Huels was raised on a farm in Southern Illinois. Growing up with a soundtrack of honky tonk and his parents’ collection of 40’s swing era LP’s, he developed a broad appreciation for American roots music. He found his passion when his father bought him his first trumpet at age 10 and the performer in him came alive. During college Billy Joe put down his trumpet, and set out to further his education and ‘make a living.’ But a love of playing music and performing never left him, and before long he found himself in the Seattle club scene belting out his original compositions with a Fender Telecaster in hand. Eventually, the trumpet was dusted off where it took center stage, and the unique sound and style of the Dusty 45s was born.

As founder and front man of the Dusty 45s, Billy Joe’s charisma and commanding stage presence has kept the Dusty 45s at the top of the Seattle music scene for more than a decade. He has contributed to numerous recordings with top Northwest artists, and most recently has lent his guitar and growling trumpet skills to the legendary Wanda Jackson.

Jerry Battista (Lead guitar)

Blues, rock and roots veteran Jerry Battista has been the lead guitarist in the Dusty 45s for nearly 10 years. Formerly, he was a member of several top Northwest bands, including The Allies and Edison Jones. Battista also fronts his own group and continues to be a popular draw in clubs throughout the Northwest. He was named ‘Best Guitarist’ by Seattle Weekly in 2010, and in 2011 his band The Davanos was named Best Cover Band in Seattle.

Kelly Van Camp (Drums and harmonica)

Kelly Van Camp grew up just south of the Seattle border, in Olympia, WA. His passion for drumming is nearly as old as he is. At age six he became drummer for his sibling/cousin band, showing the world that Quaker Oats boxes, tupperware, and pencils really can make great music. Flammable Gas recorded more than a dozen homemade albums. By age 12 it became apparent that Kelly’s passion for drumming wasn’t just a stage that he was going through, and his parents enrolled him in private lessons. He started gigging with his own bands and other groups during high school and hasn’t stopped since. Kelly moved to Seattle in 2001 and has contributed significantly to the rock, roots and ska scenes, performing and recording with his own bands as well as a wide variety of acts and musicians, including Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, and Dave Dederer of The Presidents of The United States Of America. He’s been with the Dusty 45s since 2006.

Jeff Gray (Upright Bass)

Jeff Gray is a Southern boy who grew up in Georgia and now hails from Bellingham, WA. His unmistakable sound is an integral part of the Americana roots rock engine of the Dusty 45s. He was a member of Bellingham’s Footstompin’ Trio and the Gadjo Gypsies. Additionally, he expresses his talents writing and arranging for a wide variety of Northwest groups.

Aug 24    Cee Cee James @ The Rockfish
"SERIOUSLY RAW" ~ Roy Brown - Washington Blues Society:

Outside of Portland, several years ago, a little girl that her mother called Christina took her mom's hand on the way to Sunday services. She was thrilled by the voices, the passion that came with voices; Christina was driven by something deep inside and had to join in. She never strayed far from those voices. As time passed, one emerged. Singing her passion became the life journey of Cee Cee James. She is not only one of us, she is one of ours, spending her days in the small northwest village of Langley, on Whidbey Island while spilling her guts for the northwest blues scene, night after night.

Dropping her childhood name, and coming off a huge success of the first blues genre album, Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl, her second blues CD was recorded last fall at the Sunbanks Rhythm and Blues Festival. Soon to be released is Seriously Raw, Live at Sunbanks. While 'Snakes' was a bit of a concept album and musically went in multiple directions, the upcoming release is an outdoor, pure party buffet of blues, blues / rock, and with just a sprinkling of straight ahead rock and roll (check out her version of Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits" as arranged Cee Cee James style.

The record starts out pure blues covering "Crossroads" the likes of which you won't believe if you are thinking Robert Johnson. If he could hear this version today, a smile would come over his face. Next comes 'I Ain't Superstitious' again nothing like Willie Dixon, but more traditional than Crossroads. Cee Cee's writing is showcased in the next three tunes, penned for the former and the upcoming studio album slated for a fall release. Crowd response says it all when you are talkin' music that touches the soul. Comparisons to Janis Joplin will never stop. Instead of fighting it, Cee Cee embraces it with a Janis tribute on the next two cuts, 'Mercedes Benz' and 'Bobby McGee.' My very favorite Cee Cee James cover is Luther Allison's 'House of the Blues.' It's on this record, and it is well worth the price of admission just to have this song.

Cee Cee is backed on this record by the one and only Chris Leighton on drums with Dan Mohler on bass and "Slide Boy" Rob Andrews on slide and rhythm guitar. This combination makes up one of the tightest rhythm sections in blues music. On lead guitar Jason Childs is not a screaming, mind numbing player, but one who produces an intricacy of notes and chords, and an intimacy of feel that turns your head in his direction when he takes a solo.

Cee Cee James is a near term future national talent, and she is breaking out right now. Seriously Raw is a five star record.

"Duke" Wayne was reintroduced to life at sea through NORWESTER and Mr. Roos and in 1955 they entered into a partnership owning NORWESTER. During this time, NORWESTER received a face lift. A large day room and wheel house was added forward of the original salon and headroom was increased to an amazing 6? 6? (to accommodate Mr. Wayne?s 6? 4? height and allow him to keep his hat on). Solid bulwarks, cover over the side decks and new upper decks were also added. While in this partnership, she plied the waters of southern California and Mexico and became somewhat of a celebrity in her own right.

Aug 25    Chris Eger Band @ The Heart of Anacortes
The Chris Eger Band is a fresh, eclectic and electric group that blends a variety of music types into a style of its own. Not many musical genres are left untouched. The group draws on Blues, Rock, Funk, Rockabilly, R&B and Jazz just to name a few.

CEB is lead by 23 year old guitarist/vocalist Chris Eger, whose funky, blues guitar work and powerful tenor vocals are sure to excite. Eger is backed by bassist and father Randy Eger, who has over 35 years of live performance experience. Drummer, Mark Clark, is a veteran of the Northwest music scene, playing with the likes of the New Deal Rhythm Band and the Chryslers. Clark brings a solid, funky foundation to the group. Chris’s long time high school friend, Brendan Abshier, has been the CEB’s right hand man since the beginning. Abshier’s tasty B3 and keyboard chops fill out the band’s sound.

The band’s high-energy performances are always a crowd pleaser and signature of what the cast brings. Whether it’s a rockin’ blues beat or a mellow groove, the band is tight, funky and dishes out plenty of soul.

CEB has shared the stage with many greats including: Grand Funk Railroad, Jamie O’Neal, Chance McKinney n’ CrossWire, Kal David, and the Zen Blues Quartet.

Aug 25    Badd Dog Blues Society @ The Rockfish
Tapping the wealth of abundant talent in the Bellingham blues scene, Andy Koch has brought together an up-tempo ensemble sure to please blues lovers everywhere. You’ll be in for an evening to remember as Andy and his band wind their way through the back alleys of the blues; dancing, singing
and howling the night away.

The Badd Dog Blues Society — an independent band formed in 1995 — tours steadily, working three to four nights a week from the mountains to the islands. The band travels as a four to five piece, drawing from a growing dog pound orchestra of more than 40 top-notch players, spreading the word of the
blues throughout the Northwest and up and down the West Coast from Baja to Alaska.

Andy Koch (harmonica, vocals, guitar and keyboard) was born in Salt Lake City in 1955, raised in Seattle’s inner city and now resides in Bellingham. He has been a showman since an early age and plays a variety of instruments, but focuses on vocals and harmonica. Koch is the host of regular “open
mics” in Bellingham and a guest artist with numerous local and national artists.

A sampling of Koch’s other credits include: Three years as a street musician, roaming from New York City to San Francisco to Seattle; Merlin, The Rubber Band, Dream Suite, The Blues Bandits and The Blues Tornados. He has studied with Lee Oskar, Howard Levey (of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), First Place National Harmonica
Champion Jim McLaughlin, Phil Wiggins, Bud Spires, Mark Graham, Grant Dermodey and Gary Primich, among many others.

Koch is a member of the Bellingham Independent Musician’s Association,
Allied Arts and the Washington Blues Society, He is also a perpetrator of live music in and around
Bellingham and a talent-buyer and musical director for Wild Buffalo, Bellingham’s premier live music
venue. Koch’s exciting interpretation of the harmonica puts new definitions in the dictionary of music for
this amazingly diverse instrument. His gutsy vocals make blues aficionados scream and his fun-loving
stage presence is contagious — bringing his fans back time and time again.
